The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, Israel's capital city.

It connects Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. The tunnel's southern entrance is beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance can be located in Nahal Ein Kerem.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was opened on Thursday, by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze'ev Elkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon, chairman of Gihon as well as a multitude of cyclists were also in attendance.

Jerusalem was once very sought-after tourist destination due to its rich history. Elkin explained that the modern tourism industry is an integral part of Jerusalem's historic treasures and incorporates modern day tourism. "The inauguration (of [this] tunnel project is another aspect of the development of Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable tourist destination for all kinds of audiences in Israel as well as around the globe."

Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year to develop the tourism industry in Jerusalem and the development of exciting tourist attractions and ventures that link the rich history of our capital city's eternal past to its future... I encourage the cycling community to take a relaxing and modern route that takes you through Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.



Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool for achieving the goal to transform the idea of transport throughout Jerusalem. נווה פריצקי "The tunnel is set to connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path. The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being used as an infrastructure Tunnel that includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo as also the historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
