No NFTs In Minecraft Mojang Says
The update begins with a quick rundown of the NFTs, as well as a note about their extreme volatility. Then, it lays out the current policies for Minecraft servers. The main goal of these policies, Mojang said, is "to ensure that Minecraft remains a place where everyone can access the same content." NFTs However, they are designed to "create models of scarcity and exclusion," which is clearly contrary to the principle. And so, they're out.
"To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated within our server and client applications, nor can Minecraft game-specific content, such as skins, worlds personal items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset," Mojang wrote.
Mojang stated that the update was prompted by numerous Minecraft-associated NFTs (and play-to-earn) servers. This exploits the gap in policy to divide the community into "the haves" and "the have-nots". YASSI
Another concern is that some NFTs aren't reliable and may end up costing players who purchase them." This is a very gentle way of putting it: The non-official Minecraft NFT Game Blockverse (opens new tab) disappeared with more than $1.2M in January, is only one of some of the instances of NFT-related fraud and criminality we've seen over the past few years. This is particularly true for Minecraft because its users tend to skew younger than many other games, which makes it likely more susceptible to scams.
The official Minecraft guidelines for use (opens in a new tab) are being updated to address the issue in depth, but the short version is a hard no: "NFTs associated with any in-game content, including skins, worlds, items, or other mods" are strictly prohibited.
This isn't the end of the story. Mojang has said it will continue to track the development of blockchain technology to determine whether it will "enable more secure gaming experiences or other inclusive and practical applications in gaming," suggesting that official support for blockchain technology could be possible in the near future. "We do not have plans to introduce blockchain technology into Minecraft," however.
