Once you've found your ideal breeder and you've asked enough questions to each other to make sure everything fits together, it's time to meet your puppy in person and hopefully find the right one. There are some criteria to follow during your visit:

Check the living environment of the puppies. Is it clean and dry? Do the mother and her puppies have their own space? There shouldn't be too many dogs in one space.

Observe all dogs in the environment. Do they seem to be healthy, happy and sociable? Are they comfortable in the presence of the breeder? All dogs must be treated with respect.

Meet the mother and the rest of the litter before choosing a puppy - a responsible breeder will be happy for you to do so. It is natural for the mother to be wary of people who look at her reach but she should be attentive rather than nervous or aggressive. If they are old enough, you should be able to handle the puppies, just ask the breeder for permission beforehand.

Look at the size and character of the mother, this could give you an idea of the characteristics of your puppy when he is an adult. Ask for information about the puppy's character, health status (including genetic tests and possible health check-ups) and pedigree. Its pedigree (ancestors/family tree) must go back about five generations. It is unlikely that the father will be present during your visit, since most breeders in South Africa use a breeding male, but the breeder may have a photo to show you.

Choose your puppy Adopting a puppy is extremely exhilarating and you'll probably be looking forward to finding the perfect new companion for your family. When you buy from a breeder, you usually find out the litter of puppies is about six weeks old. All you have to do is choose the one that's right for you!

If possible, try to get there regularly, so your puppy can get to know you. You may even be able to bring your whole family, so that the puppy gets used to everyone, after all, adopting a puppy is a commitment for the whole family. Just think that meeting a lot of unknown people can be impressive for the little puppy, so if you're a large family, maybe don't visit him all at the same time. After your visit, you can leave a garment so that your puppy can get used to your smell.
