Minecraft Java Edition has always functioned pretty much the same way since developer Mojang's acquisition by Microsoft. Bedrock Edition was created to integrate with Microsoft's account system, however, Java has been operating on its own Mojang account island until now. Java Edition will soon require the use of a Microsoft account to play, but you'll at least be getting an exclusive cape for your issues.

In early 2021 in the early 2021, you'll be required to transfer your Java or Mojang account over to the Microsoft account system. Mojang claims this is to introduce two-factor authentication to increase security. However, it will also allow for better parental controls, chat blocking and invitation blocking as well as account integration with Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.

Regarding Minecraft mods and PvP Mojang says absolutely nothing is changing. Java and Bedrock will remain entirely separate games. You'll be able to continue using your current Java username, but if you're creating a Microsoft account for the first time, you could need to change your account's name. You can combine your Minecraft logins if you already have an existing Microsoft account. minecraft adventure servers

To make it easier to cope with the switch, Mojang is giving away the once Java Edition's most sought-after item which was the cape. You'll get a free cape for taking part in the migrationprocess, and while it won't feature the exclusive patterns of the Minecon mantles, it will finally give everyone the chance to feel royal for a bit.

Although there is no reason to expect anything to change, players still have concerns. Among them, the more restrictive terms of service offered by Microsoft might lead to bans and could result in some players being shut out of Minecraft.

Further details can be found in the FAQ as well as the official announcement. We'll see how it turns out in early 2021.
